Where ARC Works: In refugee camps and in towns in South Darfur and East Darfur states, in western Sudan

People We Serve: More than 700,000 internally displaced Darfuri Sudanese, refugees fleeing ongoing conflict in South Sudan, and others at risk

Violence against civilians and the dislocation of people from their homes and livelihoods has caused a public health crisis in the region.

Operational Since: 2004

Goal in Sudan: Provide integrated basic services and support to IDPs, returnees and host communities in South and East Darfur.

ARC continues to maintain an ongoing mix of emergency and recovery programs, serving well over 700,000 displaced and conflict-affected people in South and East Darfur.


In 2013, 

  • ARC provided nutrition services in 28 sites in East and South Darfur. We reached more than 11,000 malnourished mothers with children under the age of five. 
  • ARC constructed 3,600 household latrines in 2013 and provided a continuous supply of potable water to 17,500 households (well over 80,000 individuals) in internally displaced persons camps throughout Darfur. 
  • more than 12,000 babies were delivered by ARC staff. We also provided life-saving vaccination to more than 4,000 children and offered health and hygiene education to 80,000 individuals.

Current Needs:

ARC will continue pursuing the following objectives with the communities we serve -

 Improve the nutritional status of children under the age of five

Strengthen health care services and practices

Improve access to potable water and promoteing good hygiene and sanitation practices

Improve food security and livelihood opportunities among female-headed households

Distribute non-food items to conflict and disaster-affected populations

Promote peacebuilding activities
